Description
Third edition, giraffe with palm and eucalyptus illustration on cover .50 cents. Documents the founding of the Zoological Society of San Diego and the San Diego Zoo's early growth and development in San Diego's Balboa Park, including its origins in the 1915-1916 Panama Exposition. The Third edition illustrates the growth and progress of the San Diego Zoo. The guided bus tour fleet, "unique among zoos...." now includes four buses. In three years we have sold four printings of this guide amounting to more than eighty thousand books. This second edition also documents the growth and the impact of the expanded military in San Diego: The attendance at the zoo has increased steadily and with the local congestion of war installations and defense plants has reached nearly a million a year. Street cars, no longer extant, are listed in "How to Reach the Zoological Garden of San Diego." The second edition also includes a plant section for the first time, significant for its many varieties of palms and eucalyptus, species readily associated with San Diego. This edition includes a fold-out map attached to the back cover by Lowell E. Jones, Art Service Studio, as well as the Sketch Map of the San Diego Zoological Garden. Many animals and locations are pictured and described, including Colobus Monkey, "Main entrance and general office," Dr. Wegeforth riding an elephant, Galapagos Tortoise, King Snake, Captive-Bred Indian Cobra, Sidewinder, Monitor, Galapagos Iguana, Water Dragon, Gila Monster, Beaded Lizard, Snapping Turtle, Box Turtle, Mountain Gorilla, Colobus Monkey, Debrazza Guenon, Assam Langur, Silvered Leaf Monkey, Crested Macaque, Mexican Spider Monkey, Hairy Saki, Gray Gibbon, Orangutan, Chimpanzee, Mountain Gorilla, Lowland Gorilla, Mountain Gorilla, Saddlebacked Tapir, Uganda Giraffe, Hippopotamus, Indian Elephants, Pygmy Hippopotamus, Wallaby, Giant Anteater, Guanaco, Bactrian Camel, Capybara, Patagonian Cavy, Isabella Gazelle, Grevy Zebra, Grant Zebra, American Bison, African Buffalo, Bighorn Sheep, Mouflon Sheep, White-bearded Gnu, Sitatunga, Sable Antelope, Fallow Deer, Wapiti or American Elk, American Moose, European Red Deer, Anoa, California Bob Cat, Kodiak Bear, Spectacled Bear, Northern Fur Seal, African Lion, African Lioness with Young, Black Leopard, Cheetah or Hunting Leopard, Clouded Cat, Canadian Lynx, Ocelot, American Badger, Lesser Panda, Jaguarundi, Dingo, Baribussa, African Wart Hog, The Monkey-Eating Eagle, Saddle-Billed Stork, Emu, Double-Wattled Cassowary, Peruvian Pelican, Humboldt Penguin, Marabou Stork, Jabiru Stork, European Flamingo, Cattle Egret, Screamers, Coscoroba, Magellan Geese, Black Swan, Black-Necked Swan, "Birds of Prey Cage," Andean Condor, Mature, Andean Condor, Immature, Crowned Eagle, Bald Eagle, Spectacled Owl, Vulturine Guineafowl, Crowned Cranes, Demoiselle Crane, "Scripps Shore Bird Cage," Victoria Crowned Pigeon, Imperial Fruit Pigeon, Yellow-Streaked Lory, Scarlet Macaw, Road-Runner, Quetzal, Wreathed Hornbill, Red-Billed Toucan, Swaison's Toucan, Orange Cock of the Rock, Lesson's Motmot, Javan Adjutant Stork, Himalayan Bear, Cuvier's Chinchilla, European Hedgehog, Weeping Capuchin, Wallaroo, Sable Antelope, Hamadryas Baboon, Galapagos Hawk, Cayenne Lapwing, and Greater Hill Mynah.
