Description
Part of the San Jose Historical Museum Oral History Project. Sister Hernandez's interview documents the changes she saw during her experience teaching in the parochial schools of the Santa Clara Valley from the early 20th century to her retirement in the 1980s. This is also an immigrant story; Hernandez was born in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico in 1910 and immigrated to San Francisco at the age of 10, in 1920. She began teaching in San Francisco in 1932, then Gilroy, Los Angeles, before coming to St. Patrick's in San Jose. After a brief tour to Albuquerque, she returned to San Jose to teach at St. Christopher's, and Presentation High. Two interviews. The first was conducted on February 14, 1992 at St. John Vianney convent; the second was conducted at the interviewer's home at 1655 South Winchester, Campbell.
