Description
The California Nursery Company sold palms, roses, ornamentals trees and shrubs, and fruit trees from 1884 to 1971. The nursery imported plants, propagated plants, sold domestically and abroad. The owners were prominent horticulturalists: John Rock 1884-1904, George C. Roeding 1917-1928, and George C. Roeding, Jr. 1928-1972. The nursery provided plants for world's fairs, industrial, residential, government projects. They provided nursery stock to gardens like Hearst Castle, Filoli, and the state Capital. They provided fruit trees for commercial growers and homeowners. The nursery evolved from selling nursery stock to additionally providing landscape services during the 1920's. The 1938 catalog was published the year before the 1939-1940 Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island in San Francisco. A cartoon cover of the nursery in Niles and other locations, sales yards (Fresno, Modesto, Niles, Sacramento), aerial photos of nursery operations, export department, landscape organization, specimen trees, "Golden Gate Collection" of roses, "Old Adobe" collection of roses, fruit trees, "Nectar" peach, ornamentals, "Visit our Gardens", Seventh Annual Outdoor Bulb Show, "This year as we look ahead to our 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition it is interesting to speculate - would there, in truth, be any Exposition or any great metropolitan Bay community to sponsor it, but for the contribution of California’s agriculture? When we anticipate the benefits our Exposition holds for all of us, we should also remember - the man who works with his hands in his fields and his orchards in the cornerstone of our economy."
