Description
Color photo of king vulture on cover with orange lettering on a black background, "San Diego Zoo." Documents the founding of the Zoological Society of San Diego and the San Diego Zoo's early growth and development in San Diego's Balboa Park. The San Diego Zoological Gardens are unique in providing year round outdoor animal exhibits in Balboa Park. The guide celebrates the new zoo entrance, which is framed by palms, ferns and other subtropical plants. The guide includes the first mention of Banjo, the happy chip, who welcomes you to the park. The introduction includes the Zoo's dedication to children, insight to the Biological Research Insitute and the Zoological Hospital, the unique setting at the zoo, the Zoo school, publication and membership, as well as information on how to give bequests to the zoo. Admission costs 50 cents for adults, but children up to 16 years and all San Diego City and County high school students with a valid I.D. card are admitted free. The guide includes reptiles, mammals, and birds sections. Trained animal acts are presented in the Wegeforth Bowl, named for the Zoo's founder, on the A-Mesa daily. This edition includes a new fold-out map attached to the back cover by R.W. Schulteis, as well as the Sketch Map of the San Diego Zoological Garden. The new map does not include sections specifically marking where each animal is located, and rather relies on more cartoon-like drawings and large markings of each Mesa and Canyon, A through G. Many animals are pictured, including Peaches the African elephant, the Zoological Hospital and Biological institute, Barrington Island iguana, hippopotamus, Speed the giant tortoise, red diamond rattler, gaboon viper, king cobras, emerald tree boa, Sonoran gopher snakes, Cuban iguanas, American alligator, Dudley Duplex the two-headed king snake, Masai lions, Virginia opossums, Tasmanian devils, koala, hairy-nosed wombat, a gray kangaroo, a baby slow loris, night monkeys, proboscis monkey, Barbary apes, Celebes crested ape, Allen's monkey, drill, colobus monkey, a Sumatran orangutan, lowland gorilla, giant anteater, three-toed sloths, African crested porcupine, capybara, North American wolf, cape hunting dogs, Montague Island brown bear, sloth bears, lesser pandas, striped hyenas, wolverine, tiger, jaguar, Northern fur seal, Northern elephant seal, rock hyrax, Malay tapir, African wart hog, Sally and Barney the African black rhinoceroses, Nile hippopotamus, dromedary camel, guanaco, wapiti, Uganda giraffes, pronghorn antelopes, bighorn ram, sable antelope, Klipspringer, gerenuk, North African ostrich, aru double-wattled cassowary, Belle the Mantell's kiwi, king penguins, cormorant, shoebill stork, roseate spoonbill heron, American egret, black-necked screamer, whooper swan, coscoroba swan, cereopsis goose, emperor goose, secretary bird, bald eagle, monkey-eating eagle, nocturnal currasow, Indian blue peafowl, masked bobwhite, Cameroon straight-crested guinea fowl, ocellated turkey, Florida sandhill crane, crested seriema, black-necked stilt, silver gull, greater crowned pigeon, Leadbeater's cockatoo, thick-billed parrot, Cuban trogon, Lesson's motmot, concave-casqued hornbill, toco toucan, banded aracari, bare-throated bell bird, white-backed piping crow, red bird of paradise, Myer's sickle-bill bird of paradise, Princess Stephanie's bird of paradise, Himalayan white-crested jay thrush, Philippine coleto.
