Description
High Lights is a publication of the Sierra Madre Arts Guild. The Sierra Madre Arts Guild formed in March 1938. The aims of the guild were as follows: 1. For painting, etching, and photography: exhibits, contests, and prizes; 2. For poetry: contests and prizes; 3. For music and drama: concerts and theatricals; 4. Entertainments and talks on the arts; 5. An ultimate art center to further all arts in the community. In March 1940, the guild published its first issue of High Lights. The publication was edited by Elmer M. Weese. In 1943 it was edited by an editorial board including Bill Burke, Dottie Burke, Alfred James Dewey, and Leslie B. Wynne. This fascinating publication includes poems, information about exhibits, events, meetings, stories, book reviews, prints, drawings, and hand drawn advertisements for local businesses. High Lights provides a glimpse of the Sierra Madre arts community during the 1940s.
