Description
T-shirts exhibiting political slogans were very popular at the time of independence and nationhood. In efforts to unify, the government has chosen to emphasize custom and religion. These themes are represented by the national seal of a man in traditional dress circumscribed by a curved pig's tusks--emblems of particular local cultures--and the national motto of 'Long God Yumi Stanap' (With God We Stand Together). Vanuatu won its independence from France and the United Kingdom in 1980. Captain James Cook, who thought the islands resembled the rough terrain of the Scottish Hebrides, named the archipelago the New Hebrides. The new name, Vanuatu, is derived from the words 'Vanua', meaning land in several local languages, and 'tu', signifying timelessness. Taken as a whole, the name means "the land that was, is and always will be," thus reflecting the strong emotional and spiritual value which ni-Vanuatu people place on their land.
