Performing Arts (including Performance Art) Film, Audio, Video and Digital Art There were at least four contexts in which rehearsals for a performance of Ping were documented: 1) The premiere of Ping in June of 1968, which took place at Toru Takemitsu's "Orchestral Space '68" Festival in Tokyo, Japan. 2) The performance on the "CROSS TALK Inter-media" festival in 1969, in Tokyo. 3) Photos taken during the recording sessions for the CRI Record release, done at UC San Diego by Recording Engineer James Campbell. 4) Images made in association with the multimedia recording and performance done at UC San Diego in April, 2011. As the rehearsals were sometimes done under "performance" lighting conditions, it is not always possible to tell with confidence whether an image was from a rehearsal or a performance. My assumption is that, given photographic technology in the 1960's and 1970's, it is probable that all of the images that portray actual "performance-like" conditions were, in fact, rehearsals.
