Description
Since independence, skirts like the one pictured have been reclassified by the Mewun as "traditional" to be worn when participating in recently resurrected rituals for women and girls. These skirts are quickly made and dyed with purchased color, unlike the traditional ones of banana fiber which took a lot of time to construct. First, the banana filaments were removed from the soft part of the leaf by scraping and, after these threads were clean and dried, they were transformed into twisted chords by rolling them back and forth on the thigh. Then these twisted chords became the fibers of the skirt.
