Description
Wintua village relied greatly on a river that descended from the highlands and entered the sea right nearby. Near its lowest point is this large pool in the river where women gathered to wash clothes. Higher up was a bathing spot and a hose brought water from the mountains to a faucet in the center of the village. Near the large, distant promontory of land to the left is a tiny islet that villagers call Ten Stick. Story goes that it used to be bigger but a late 19th Century. English gun boat captain paid ten sticks of tobacco to villagers for the right to use the islet for target practice.
