Geophysicist and oceanographer Robert S. (Robert Sinclair) Dietz (1914-1995) from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, among many of his achievements set forth a theory of seafloor spreading, the process in which new crustal material continually up-wells from the Earth's depths along the mid-ocean ridges and spreads outward at a rate of several centimeters per year.
