Description
This photograph of Luo Xu, artist and architect and friend was taken at a three day and night unofficial Chinese culture celebration in a wine district a few hours away from Kunming in Yunnan Province which Chinese from all over China attended. Professional and local musicians, dancers and singers performed, people drank alcohol, smoked Cuban cigars and discreetly “joints” and danced together around bond fires. It was organized with local government's permission by Lu Xu, Chinese artist and free lance architect. The Brazilian carnival like atmosphere was a reminder that many parts of Yunnan Provence function as liberated zones where Chinese can spontaneously express themselves freely in ways they would not be able to in other regions of China where there is more social conformity and government surveillance.
