Description
Mewun responded to photographic efforts with amiable interest as Photographer Ann Skinner Jones and Anthropologist Joan Larcom explored the changes that nationhood brought to the village and country. The project was to document new nationhood through photographs and interviews. While photographing new events, they also sought to record cultural practices that were diminishing, for example, traditional agriculture and food preparation. This collection shows Wintua and Vanuatu at a bright turning point, somewhat optimistic about the future in 1981. While individual photos may be ambiguous, their content becomes enriched and more specific - hopefully more meaningful - when freshly related to other photos and collections. The hope is that appreciation and interpretation of these photos will increase by reaching new audiences in the archives.
