Description
She must stay there fifteen more days undergoing ritual purification. This image and caption published in 'Elota's Story: Univ. of Queensland Press, 1978. After childbirth, the mother and baby are in a taboo state and remain in a birth area in the forest below the hamlet. Men may not see the pair. The mother's needs are taken care of by a younger woman. Over several weeeks, desacralization rituals take place which let the mother and child go to the menstrual hut area and then later back to the family area.
