Another large page lay out of the complete text. Here Reynolds was searching for potential structural features and divisions (e.g., "perhaps not alone", "ping a meaning", etc.) One aim of the process was to discover potential overall subdivisions as formal sections. There were, in the end, three.

Using a typed out text, Reynolds cut the sentences into strips and then pasted them on an approximately 11 x 17 sized page so as to present the entire text in one space. Reynolds then proceeded to analyze the text with various colored annotations, e.g., in addition to editorial corrections, all words relating to color were underlined as a way of assessing the potential role of color in the resulting work.
