Description
Picturesque pricing of new money called Vatu. As a reminder of traditional values, the government named the post-independence currency vatu meaning 'stone' in some ni-Vanuatu languages. No sooner had the currency been named than its value plummeted. Local people facetiously noted that it had been well named because, after naming, the money value "sank just like a stone to the bottom of the river."
