Description
Re-photographed image from a villager's scrapbook taken in 1981 (Original photograph date unknown). Note the different lengths of cloth that drape the sides of this casket. These are given by the women mourning around the deceased. This custom seems symmetrical with the nimbwi, or carrying cloth/sling for babies. The donation of a similar length of cloth is given to the mother of the bride by the future son in law. Then, at the end of life, mourners give the deceased the same type of gift. The cloth that is given at the funeral sustains a traditional custom. UC San Diego Library, UC San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093-0175 (https://library.ucsd.edu/dc/contact)
