Jean K. Whelan of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Massachusetts, in the gas laboratory aboard the D/V Glomar Challenger (ship) during Leg 96 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. Her research focused on the formation and migration of petroleum. Whelan and her colleagues have shown that large quantities of gas flowing through some of the world's oil and gas fields may be continuously altered and sometimes refreshed by pools of hydrocarbons that lie deep within the earth. 1983
