He has been actively involved in supporting Chinese contemporary art, literature and film since the late 1970's until the present. His Li Xianting Film Fund sponsored eleven festivals of independent documentary and feature films until 2014. Today it functions as an archive for the independent Chinese films and materials written about them. It also hosts film making courses for young Chinese students during the summers.
