Description
International Newsreel photograph of Edward Washington Smith, a 25 year old African-American man, standing next to a plane with a parachute, after making a 1500 parachute jump over Lunken Field in Cincinnatti, Ohio. Description on the back of photograph identifies Smith as the first African-American in the Middle-west, and probably the world, to make a parachute jump. Photograph is dated September 5, 1928 with a filing dating of September 10, 1928. News slug assigned by the news agency and printed on the back on the photograph, "Negro leaps 1500 ft. in first parachute X jump," includes terminology commonly used during that time period that is now considered pejorative.
