Description
Box 06, Slide 26 Students teaching American visitors how to fire a rifle in the afternoon at Xigangchun Red Guard Elementary School, Dalian. Summer, 1973. “I cradled a rifle in my hands and tried to imagine vicious Soviet social imperialists at the foot of the reddish brown hill in front of me. ‘All right,’ said the eight-year-old boy in white shirt, green pants, and red kerchief standing next to me, ‘now hold steady, carefully take aim, and fire.’ The explosion broke the afternoon silence. It was the first time I had ever fired a weapon, and, not surprisingly, my target was still standing. The boy walked over and took the rifle from me. ‘It's like this,’ he said. Within seconds, all eleven targets were full of holes. The other boys and girls put their rifles down and laughed and clapped. As far as they were concerned, the Russians wouldn't stand a chance.”--Chinoy, M. (1999). In China live: People power and the television revolution (pp. 47). Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.
