Description
During the months of February through April, over a million Gulf Corvina (Cynoscion othonopterus) migrate to the Colorado River Delta in the Upper Gulf of California to amass a large spawning aggregation that is the focus of a large fishery based out of El Zanjón, El Golfo de Santa Clara, and San Felipe. When aggregated, male Gulf Corvina actively produce croaking sounds that can be recorded and measured. On 28 March 2014, researchers visited the spawning aggregation location to record Gulf Corvina sound production with a portable hydrophone in order to determine the spatial distribution of the aggregation and infer fish abundances across the Delta. Sound measurements indicated that the aggregation measured over 10 km in length over the survey area with regions of higher sound levels that likely were a product of higher fish abundances and reproductive behaviors. Differences were observed on the incoming and outgoing tides, with the highest levels of sound measured during the outgoing tide when spawning is known to occur. Croaking Gulf Corvina created an environment 10 times louder than normally present. This study supports the use of methods to measure fish sound production to infer spawning activity, potential abundance, and aggregation distribution.
