Description
Kaindum Isno came closer than any other Wintua/Lorlow resident to being a traditional 'bigman'. His opinion shaped those of many others. In the 1970's he was a frequent host to all male beer gatherings on Lamango (beer being prohibited in Wintua since missionization). After independence with the revival of pre-colonial tradition, kava replaced beer at these gatherings. The roots of the plant are used to produce a drink with entheogen or psychoactive properties that induces a pleasant, sometimes spiritual experience. Mewun like other ni-Vanuatu are proud of being the first Pacific islanders to discover the value of kava.
