Description
Day 13 May 21, 2016 Title: A Cognitive History Artist: Richard Gleaves 12-1 pm. Writing on walls of the University Art Gallery. I've been visiting the University Art Gallery for 30 years, so this is like a death in the family. Would it be possible for me to perform the following action somewhere in the interior of the gallery? Using a suitable instrument - pen, pencil, or ink marker - write on the interior wall of the gallery a list of all the art I can remember seeing in shows there. To clarify, "write" indicates writing not large but at the intimate scale of a love letter, while "there" includes both ends of the Mandeville building that the gallery has existed in since 1986, which is when I first started visiting. The list may include the names of artists, descriptions of work, people related to the gallery, related impressions... basically everything I can remember as I write. Note that I won't prepare a list beforehand to transcribe from, as the purpose of the action is to recall as I write on-the-fly, and see what memories surface in the context of the space. If such an action is possible, let me know when would be a good time to enact it.
