Description
Some of the villagers now receive remittances from members who have moved into governmental positions vacated by Europeans in the nation's capital. A few houses of more permanent materials, concrete ad galvanized iron, have been introduced to Mewun villagers. These homes may be equipped with kerosene refrigerators and water-catching tanks. Because houses are symbols of membership, Mewun emigrant families living elsewhere continue to assert their ties to Mewun through unoccupied homes that hold their place in rural villages or homes where their relatives reside. Hanging along with the kitchen tools is the jaw of a 10 foot long tiger shark who threatened reef fishing for years until locals caught it with a fishing net.
