Description
Kaindum, who is fluent in English, reviews this pamphlet on what it takes to be a good employee in an office. This "Work Isn't Easy" pamphlet uses a graphic-novel style to promote worker reliability and a strong work ethic. The pamphlet includes tips on training and promotion, being on time, and other qualities needed to be an effective office worker. There is a large cultural gap between colonials and locals that is particularly apparent in attitudes about "work." This booklet attempts to close that gap. For the locals, work is physical labor and one ni-Vanuatu commented that people who "eat by using their pencils" don't really work. When Vanuatu gained Independence from France and Great Britain, one resident commented on Lini's heavy weight: 'Oli kaikai long pensil nomo. Oli no wok' or "They just eat from the pencil. They don't work." UC San Diego Library, UC San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093-0175 (https://library.ucsd.edu/dc/contact)
