"Take a trip through celebrating Scripps Institution or Oceanography's first one hundred years and the people who made it great. At the dawn of the 20th century, a broader new view of ocean science was emerging, largely as a result of the efforts of UC Berkeley zoology professor William E. Ritter. In 1903, Ritter and a group of prominent San Diego residents founded a small marine laboratory that became Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Scripps has played a key role in defining the science of oceanography. Its scientists and ships have sailed more than five million miles circumnavigating the globe, examining icebergs, exploring tropical islands, monitoring volcanoes, and investigating marine life and Earth's systems. Today, Scripps Institution of Oceanography is guided by its mission to seek, teach, and communicate scientific understanding of the oceans, atmosphere, Earth, and other planes for the benefit of society and the environment."
