Description
In the last quarter of 1989, the California Department of Health Services (DHS) put out a request for proposal to undertake “Initial baseline Survey of attitudes, behaviors and media exposure regarding smoking and tobacco use.” In January 1990, the contract was awarded to University of California, San Diego (UCSD). The 1990-1991 California Tobacco Survey (CTS) was the first in a series of cross-sectional studies to collect information about tobacco use and behaviors among California adults and teenagers. Westat Inc. was subcontracted to conduct this survey. Four instruments were used in this baseline CTS: Screener Interview, Extended Adult Interview, Extended Youth Interview, and Pregnancy Extended Interview. This baseline CTS was conducted between June 1990 and July 1991. The objective of this survey was to collect baseline representative statewide information on tobacco-related behaviors, knowledge and attitudes towards smoking. These data are used by the California DHS to plan and assess the effectiveness of smoking cessation strategies. Research Data Curation Program, UC San Diego, La Jolla, 92093-0175 (https://lib.ucsd.edu/rdcp) Telephone interview and survey conducted approximately every three years; samples of the California telephone household population drawing from Random Digit Dial (RDD) samples by Westat, Incorporated. These data are to be used only for the purpose of health statistical reporting and analysis. Participants in the surveys have been assured confidentiality; no effort should be made to determine the identity of any participant(s). Data used in published works or any form of public dissemination should acknowledge the California Tobacco Survey as the original source. The suggested citation, "Source: California Tobacco Survey, (year)", should appear at the bottom of all tables and figures. Published or publicly disseminated data must also include a disclaimer that credits any analyses, interpretations, or conclusions reached to the author and not to the California Tobacco Control Program or the University of California. Users who wish to publish a technical description of the data should make a reasonable effort to insure that the description is not inconsistent with that provided by the survey authors.
