Ai Weiwei was famous and had a reputation as an innovative artist by that time, but this was before he gained an international reputation as a political activist. Ai Weiwei ‘s father was the famous poet Ai Qing. He attended Beijing Film Academy in the late 1970s and was a member of the experimental and politically conscious art group Xing Xing during the early 1980’s.He is now living in exile in Berlin.
