Sculpture and Installations After her initial residency in the region, Mexico City artist Silvia Gruner was drawn to working directly on the border fence. She chose a stretch of the fence running along the residential neighborhood of Colonia Libertad in Tijuana. Entitled "The Middle of the Road/La mitad del camino," the installation consisted of more than 100 replicas of the Aztec goddess Tlazolteotl in a birthing position on metal stools, mounted directly onto the border fence. The goddess suggests fertility, a point of passage - an entering through the ritual of birth where life is being recycled or regenerated.
