Description
Post-independence changes in wealth and development of economic classes are dramatically reflected in people's houses. Some villagers regularly receive large amounts of money from adult children who have become successful wage earners elsewhere. Their house interiors in 1981 included many more material possessions--sets of china, refrigerators and kitchen sinks, for example--than some of their neighbors. A woman's 'burao sket' (ceremonial skirt) is rolled for storage and hanging on the wall. This house even had its own water collection tank so that the resident no longer hauled water from the village hose pipe or the river.
