Description
Ban Huar and her husband Xiao Di are a typical Dali success story. They gave up their jobs in Guangzhou and Beijing more than twenty years ago to live a " free life" in Dali. Now they own two guest houses which have served as salons for Chinese writers, artists, musicians, singers, film directors, actresses and a wide range of Chinese who live in Dali or are passing through. They also have ties to the young Chinese in Dali and in the surrounding villages who are living on the margins of Chinese society. Ban Huar is Xiaojian's, my wife's, closest friend. The photograph was taken in a music bar.
