Oscar Newman was from Pentecost, but he lived for many years as the general manager or boss of the workers at Lolowai Hospital. He was well-respected, good at his job, and well-integrated into Aoban society. On August 1, 1970, I attended a rank-taking in Longana in which Oscar stepped into the role of sponsor for a fellow Pentecost islander who was too sick to attend.
