Portrait of P.F. (Per Fredrik) Scholander who was a physiologist and became well known for his field and experimental studies on both animals and plants, especially those living in extreme ecological conditions. In 1965 Scholander established the Physiological Research Laboratory at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. In 1979 Scholander received the Nansen Award for Polar Research. 1971
