Caption on back: Blocking the boisterous Columbia River, 95 miles west of Spokane, Washington, the Grand Coulee Dam serves the world's largest hydroelectric generators and is the key structure of the nation's largest single irrigation development--the Columbia Basin Project--which will transform a million-acre expanse into thousands of thriving farms. Lake Roosevelt, the reservoir seen in the foreground, extends northward 151 miles to Canada.
