Interior of the Wintua church. The earliest and most powerful European influences in these islands were British missionaries. Initially ignored by European governments, the New Hebrides was later colonized by Great Britain at the insistence of local British missionaries who sought protection from unscrupulous traders, rival French claims, and indigenous people. In contrast, the first French to arrive came just to trade and later brought Catholic missionaries to support education and other cultural changes. French colonization followed these influences.
