Description
Women in south China use umbrellas to protect themselves from the intense summer sun. One function of umbrellas used in sunlight conditions was to avoid darkening of facial skin. There was a social class dimension to this practice. Darker skins were often associated with peasants who worked under the sun in the open fields. Summer 1971.
