Description
Re-photographed image of the re-invention of custom, anniversary celebration from a Wintua villager's scrapbook. Vanuatu, formerly the New Hebrides, won its independence from France and the United Kingdom in 1980. The newly independent government was faced with the task of creating a nation out of different local groups and foreign immigrants. The preservation of custom is an important means of reinforcing national identity. In efforts toward unity, the new government has chosen to emphasize traditional custom and religion.
