Description
Relijen' The earliest and most powerful British influences were missionaries. The Presbyterian Mission was responsible for the mass migration of Mewun from the small villages in the interior to the four large mission villages on the coast. Christianization brought to the Mewun many changes in housing, clothing and daily regimen. Most valuable to the Mewun, it brought peace from tribal warfare. Before the gospel of Jesus Christ, people lived in a world of spirits, believed to be associated with stone, banyan trees, rivers, mountains, the moon and others. In the period just before Independence, the Presbyterian church provided a lot of support and education about political organization. This photo shows an interior close up view of the altar in the Wintua Presbyterian church. UC San Diego Library, UC San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093-0175 (https://library.ucsd.edu/dc/contact)
