Description
Xu Xing is an acclaimed writer and independent documentary film director who has won numerous international prizes. He is often called "The Chinese Jack Kerouac." His avant-garde novels, short stories and plays of the 1980s inspired a new generation of young Chinese. He lived in exile in Germany after the June 4th, 1989 Incident in Tiananmen Square but returned to China during the 1990s. I spent time with Xu Xing and Yang Lina (female documentary film director) on several occasions from 2001 to 2003. This poor quality photograph documents an amazing experience. Xu Xing invited me to spend an afternoon with him in his apartment to drink "baijiu" and give him advice about his new Chinese girlfriend. We spent most of our time talking about his life in China and Europe. Later his girlfriend (a modern dance student) stopped by, and we had dinner together.
