Box 04, Slide 36 Americans visitors picking cucumbers with a local worker in the Wusan People's Commune's fields, Shenyang. Chinese workers are gathering the cucumbers to a larger bamboo basket. Summer, 1973. "Feeling faintly absurd, I bent low in the fields of the Wusan People's Commune near Shenyang, my back aching… Responding to our complaints, the guides had arranged for us to “engage in manual labor.” Participating in ordinary peasant life was a welcome respite from endless jieshao, “brief introductions” and turned out to be one of the most memorable moments of my trip.
