Description
The viceroy Branciforte explains that the restriction on aguardiente de caña (an alcoholic drink derived from fermented cane sugar) was lifted by King Charles IV of Spain on March 17, 1796, and announced in a bando on December 9th. However, since that time a number of vinaterias (liquor merchants) have been selling the rum that was made illegally before the ban was lifted, a punishable crime. The viceroy gives all individuals three days from the date of this broadside to turn in all of the rum that was produced during the period of the ban.
