Description
During the first campaign and election for island government officials, Alick Luan, a Presbyterian pastor (standing in foreground) campaigning for office here, invokes the powerful connections between the church and politics. Noting that the church has always been political in these islands, he added that Jesus himself was political. He was sure his experience as pastor for 17 years would help him in politics. He finished his speech with a metaphor taken from the land or ground, which is the basis for relationships and production in Vanuatu. "I know that I am old, but this is an example to help you judge whether I can still do good work. The mango, the coconut and the breadfruit still bear fruit as long as water comes to them from the ground. Power comes from the ground. I trust myself. My muscles are old, but I have experience and my power comes from God. I can do it if you choose me!" UC San Diego Library, UC San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093-0175 (https://library.ucsd.edu/dc/contact)
