Drill Pipe Handling-Drill crewmen on the Deep Sea Drilling Project drill ship, Glomar Challenger, prepare to add another 94-foot stand of 5-inch pipe while drilling and coring at a Mid-Atlantic site. The 10,500-ton, 400-foot Challenger was designed by Global Marine, Inc., of Los Angeles for the special requirments of the 18-month Deep Sea Drilling Project. The Challenger is dynamically positioned, making it possible to remain on station without anchoring while operating in waters up to 20,000 feet in depth
