Description
Huang Xiang (L) is considered to be one of the most important post-cultural revolution poets of China. He is also a master calligrapher. He has a long history of political problems in China and consequently has been living in the US for many years. Ma Jian (R) is an internationally acclaimed Chinese novelist who has been living in England. He is well known in Europe, North America and other regions of the world including Hong Kong, Taiwan and the West but no longer in China because of his social and political criticism. This photograph was taken in NYC at Rise Up: Tiananmen's Legacy of Freedom and Democracy which commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Incident in Beijing on June 4, 1989. The event was a part of the PEN World Voices Festival.
