Description: Scope/Content: Manuscript. Printed recipe pasted on front paste-down endpaper. Lord's prayer written in a spiral is pinned to verso of front free endpaper with straight pin. Laid in at p. [26] of first sequence: several torn pieces of paper including one with text reading "Geo. Sudell" and "in Essex." Laid in at end of volume: printed clipping with handwritten "York, July 27th 1751"; newspaper clipping about worms; prescription dated "Sep. 24 46" for "Francis Thornburg Esqr." Index to partial contents at beginning of volume.
Scope/Content: Manuscript cookery book originally belonging to Joanna Sudell, containing medical remedies as well as cookery recipes. Several receipts and recipes are attributed to their originators. The volume contains several hands besides the hand of Joanna Sudell, who was probably the wife of Thomas Sudell of Wanlass Park and West Witton, Yorkshire. It appears that the volume may have passed down to her daughter, Katherine, who married Francis Thornburg in 1734.
