Description
Scope/Content: Manuscript with calligraphic flourishes and drawings. Front cover signed but faded: John Martin, Jan 31st 1726. On p. 99: "Ino. Mar'n."
Scope/Content: Manuscript cipher book, containing arithmetical calculations and word problems, all based on goods and exchanges in 18th century England. For example, prices for goods such as Virginia tobacco, wine and cloth are used in calculations and a South Sea Bond is used in an example about calculating interest. The entire text is written in an early 18th century calligraphic hand and most pages include flourishes, embellishments and drawings.
Condition: Contemporary vellum; defective spine.
