Scope/Content: Copious manuscript notes and annotations by Thomas Austen in his copy of An account of some remarkable passages in the life of a private gentleman (1708), dating from the mid- to late 18th century. The front paste-down endpaper includes a long note by Austen explaining the role of the book in his life; the same page includes a key to Austen's annotation symbols as well as a biographical note about Austen written by later owner Dr. F. William Cock. Annotations provide commentary, link certain passages to the annotator's life, index key terms, reference various books and authors, translate portions of the printed text, and correct printed errors. Austen also uses the three symbols referenced in his front pastedown to mark up the printed text. Austen was the rector of Hoo, Kent and matriculated from Cambridge.
