Description
Scope/Content: Manuscript.
Scope/Content: Manuscript commonplace book containing primarily extracts from historical works about England in the 16th and 17th centuries. Extracts are grouped somewhat thematically and topics range from methods of entering illegitimate children in parochial registers, to the history of hackney coaches, to anecdotes about Sir Robert Walpole, to bon mots of Charles II, among many, many others. Extracts appear to have been taken from published works such as Stow's and Holinshed's Chronicles as well as parliamentary proceedings and manuscript parish record books. The volume was probably composed in the late 1700s to early 1800s, as the latest date mentioned in the text is 1788.
