Description
Scope/Content: Manuscript.
Scope/Content: Manuscript volume of poems and riddles largely composed by Mary Woodyeare Tibbits between 1774 and 1806. Tibbits compiled the volume around 1800, copying out her own compositions in roughly chronological order, beginning with a story she wrote in 1774, at the age of 10 and continuing with additions up to about 1806. Many poems are reflections on her reading, such as "On reading poems by Ann Yearsley" or "On reading Caroline of Litchfield, " while others are addressed to her sisters, friends, and her future husband. Excerpts from published works such as Romeo and Juliet are also included, as are several poems by her cousin, Francis Drake (1721-1795). The volume was used to press flowers and leaves in the 19th century by Tibbits's granddaughter Mary Isabella Hood, wife of the 3rd Viscount Hood, who wrote annotations for her no longer extant specimens. There are still two ferns (without any annotations) near the end of the volume.
