Description
Scope/Content: Printed copy of the 1668 drawing manual, The excellency of pen and pencil, interleaved with manuscript notes in several hands. There are also 104 leaves at the end of the printed text, about half of which contain manuscript entries. Most of the manuscript material refers back to the printed work, and consist of additional recipes for ink and other related recommendations. A few printed pages even have manuscript additions and insertions in the same hand, which appears to be roughly contemporary to the published book (one manuscript entry is dated 1683). Other hands, both contemporary and later, have contributed other art-related recipes as well as recipes for medical remedies. There are also some sketches and pen trials.
Condition: Bound in contemporary vellum with fore-edge flap, double ruled in blind. Flap secured with metal clasps (one is lacking); additional brass strip, folded and adhered to bottom edge of front board, for carrying on a belt.
